The entry level hatchback segment is the bread and butter for every mainstream car company in India. Maruti Suzuki is the king of this segment with plenty of heavyweights such as the Alto, Alto K10, Wagon R, and the Celerio. The cars in this segment offer market leading efficiency and compact dimensions to battle the daily city brawl.
There have been many game-changers in this segment over the years. The Eon wowed India with its beautiful lines and amazing quality. The Tata Nano caused quite a stir both in and outside India with its "below 1 lakh" price tag. The Renault kwid can be considered a pioneer because of the outstanding value it offers with its segment first touchscreen infotainment system.
SO before I start let me tell you a few considerations: All the cars are petrol powered and I will be mentioning which version to buy if you have 5 lakhs and change. The prices are on road prices, so that you won't have to find your calculator. You really owe me, guys... and gals (must be gender neutral).
So, here is my top 4 hatchbacks under 5 lacks in no particular order. Why 4 you may ask... Because I can't find a fifth. Simple as that!

This car is so much more than a pimped up Alto. This is a whole new car chapter in the epic called the Suzuki Alto. It has a cracker of an engine which forms a beautiful blend between efficiency and power. This particular variant comes with the added convinience of an AMT which means that your lazy left foot can be buried in your beautiful sneakers (Gender Neutral footwear). For those who want maximum thrills the slick manual transmission will delight your heart (and your pocket). You get your 5 lakhs (4.96 lakhs to be precise) worth with the infotainment system and quality interiors. The rock solid relaibility and low maintainence costs mean Indians have been been lapping it up since it was launched. And I think you should too...

2 words. "Beautiful" and "Car". But this particular variant is so much more than a pretty face. It has a great engine, quality interiors and is packed to the gill with features. So much so that it does justice to 5.46 lakh ticket price. In fact the tall second gear is enough to delight any petrolhead. The practical family man will be delighted with the efficient engine and practical cabin. The interiors may not be as spacious, but you will come to forgive it due to its beautiful cabin which is unlike anything at this price point, with the possible exeption of...

Wow! Tata proved to the Indian market that they still got it! Beautiful Cabin, Great quality, good looking car, only let down by its engine which is neither efficient nor powerful (unless you really rev it out). Tata's large network and service will draw in customers. This is car you should seriously consider if Value for money is your primary concern. The Tata Thiago delivers in terms of Equipment and Quality for the 5.52 lakh price tag it commands. I would advice you to keep away from the AMT variants which are jerky and inconsistent.

This is a car that changed the game with 1 feature. The touch-screen Infotaiment. This particular variant has that and much, much, much more. The 1 Litre engine is quite peppy. The space on offer is brilliant. The Boot is as big as it gets for a sub 5 lakh car. The real Jewel in the crown is how this small little car handles road undulation. It will cruise through the biggest of potholes without a hint of a shrug. The achilles heel has to be its drab interiors which is something most owners will come to over look. At 4.6 lakh this is one of the best things you can buy at this price, let alone cars.
